Studying in Canada

Canada welcomes over 130,000 international students a year to study in Canada. If you are thinking about coming too, you're making a good choice. Canada is well known worldwide for its high quality education, training and language programs.

Our country is vast — stretching across North America from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, and north to the Arctic Ocean. In all this space, we can offer many places for you to study, and a wide range of programs to consider. No matter where you choose to study, you will find other students and Canadians who will help you adapt to life in Canada.

Elementary / Secondary Education (Kindergarten - Grade 12)
In Canada, the provinces and territories are responsible for education at the elementary and secondary (K-12) levels. If you are coming to Canada for your elementary or secondary education, contact the ministry / department responsible for education where you will live.

    Postsecondary Education (Colleges & Universities)
In Canada, universities and colleges also come under the authority of the provincial and territorial governments. Private schools and colleges must be registered with these authorities in order to operate in any province / territory. All schools — universities, colleges, technical schools, community colleges and private career colleges — set their own admission requirements. In Canada, accreditation applies to programs of study rather than institutions, both of which are of consistent high quality.

Things to Do If You're Planning to Study in Canada

Here is a "quick list" of some of the important things you need to do when planning to study in Canada.

    • Start early — 6 months to 1 year — before you plan to come to Canada.

    • Read what the Canadian government (Citizenship & Immigration Canada) has to say about studying in Canada, and this factsheet of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about applying for admission to Canadian universities and colleges from outside Canada.

    • Explore the undergraduate, graduate, language and training programs of study available across Canada, or in a particular part of Canada, or at a particular postsecondary institution.

    • Know how you will finance your studies and living expenses in Canada. Student loans from the federal or provincial / territorial governments are available to landed immigrants and Canadian citizens only. Find out if financial assistance or scholarships are available from your home country. Grants to international students from Canadian sources are limited. Here are some key sources:

      • Awards for Study in Canada (Canadian Bureau for International Education)

      • Canadian & International Scholarship Programs for foreign students wishing to study in Canada (administered by International Council for Canadian Studies)

      • Higher Education Scholarships (administered by the Assn. of Universities & Colleges of Canada)

      • www.scholarshipscanada.com (EDge Interactive Publishing Inc.)

      • Scholarly Exchanges

      • OR, the postsecondary institution you plan to attend in Canada. Some universities offer student assistance, especially at the graduate studies level.

    • If successful applying for a program of studies at a Canadian institution, confirm your acceptance to get a letter of acceptance from the school — a requirement for a study permit to Canada. The school Registrar can provide information on tuition fees, health insurance, scholarships, lodging and living expenses, language requirements, etc. R

    • Before you enroll in a private school or college, check with local Canadian Immigration officials that the school meets Canadian requirements or the rules of the province where the institution is located.

    • If you plan to study in the province of Quebec, you may need a Quebec Selection Certificate (CAQ) for student authorization. Check the prerequisites for study in Quebec, or visit a Quebec Immigration Service office for information.

    • Find out if you will also require a medical examination or a temporary resident visa to study in Canada, or visit a local Canadian visa office for more information.

    • If you have not previously studied in English for at least a few years, you will likely have to pass a fluency test. At an English-language university, this usually involves scoring 550 or better on the written test, or 213 on the computerized Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Some institutions will admit you with lower scores on condition that you take a language course prior to, or at the same time as, your regular program.
